Experimental Design

For many students, this is the section where the material starts to toughen. Students actually have to read long paragraphs describing a study or experiment and actually asked (gasp!) to write answers in sentence form. This unit has two types of problems associated with it; problems dealing with designing studies and experiments and marginal distributions. The marginal distributions material might be better discussed in the probability section but since typically the data is a result of a study, it is featured here. There is a terrific simulation that really gets kids to understand the nuances of benefits from different types of sampling techniques. There is also a more involved simulation using an Excel spreadsheet that focus on sampling and is designed to be used in the inference section as well.

Variable Association
4-page Packet *
Students have a lot of trouble deciding whether associations are positive or negative and whether the association is causation or onfounding. This packet helps them (and you) understand the difference and provides questions open to debate. Exp01VariableAssociation.pdf (132 KB)
Experimental Design
3-page Packet
All the terms and concepts that students have to know in this section are covered here. Exp02ExperimentalTerms.pdf (128 KB)
Sampling
2-page Worksheet *
A simple assignment that has students choose SRS's and sample by stratification using their table of random numbers or their calculator. Exp03SamplingTechniques.pdf (88 KB)
Sampling
5-page Worksheet
A super simulation that allows students to understand the different methods of sampling. Two assignments are given, one an individual one and a class assignment. Exp04SamplingSimulation.pdf (180 KB)
Sampling
2-page Quiz *
A nice quiz that focuses on students understaing stratified samples. Exp05SamplingQuiz.pdf (100 KB)
Experiments
16-page Worksheet *
Students have so much trouble understanding the difference between randomized models, blocking, and matched pairs design. This is a good worksheet from which to teach to help them understand the difference. Exp06ExperimentalDesignProb.pdf (192 KB)
Experiments
6-page Worksheet *
More problems in experimental design, similar to the one above. Exp07Blocking.pdf (80 KB)
Experimental Design
3-page Packet *
A review of the important concepts of the experimental design part of the unit. Exp08ExperimentalReview.pdf (84 KB)
Experimental Design
3-page Test *
It is so hard to test in this area. This is a matching test that focuses on students reading and interpreting. This exam will make them think but is easy to grade. Exp09ExperimentalTermsMatch.pdf (104 KB)
Marginal and Conditional Distributions
4-page Worksheet *
A basic worksheet involving the election that makes students generate marginal distributions as well as conditional ones. Exp10ConditionalDist.pdf (96 KB)
Marginal and Conditional Distributions
2-page Worksheet *
Another worksheet similar to the one above. Exp11Marginals.pdf (88 KB)
Marginal and Conditional Distributions
2-page Quiz *
A short quiz that has students doing calculations with marginal and conditional distributions. Exp12MarginalQuiz.pdf (80 KB)
Simpson's Paradox
1-page Quiz *
Another quiz dealing with conditional distributions but incorporates Simpson's paradox as a bonus. Exp13Simpsons.pdf (68 KB)
Sampling
18-page Packet
A packet that works in conjuction with the Newton simulation below. If you have the time, this will really benefit students as the census problem it deals with is one that they can relate to. Great if you are teaching in the block or have access to computers. Exp14NewtonProb1.pdf (668 KB)
Sampling
Excel file
This file is used to accompany the Newton packet above. It will only work with computers that have Visual Basic installed (the newer version of Office unfortunately does not). NewtonSimulation.xls (376 KB)
